Denied Veterans Benefits Over Same-Sex Marriage

A disabled Navy veteran was denied an increase in her monthly disability check because she was married to another woman. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the federal statue defined a spouse as a "person of the opposite sex." Thus, the veteran's application was invalid. As a result, the veteran publicized her case to the public.
